Football is King. I already had a sense of what that was like growing up in Texas, but I really think it's a whole 'nother level here. Maybe it's b/c they really only have one team to cheer for, whereas Texas had several...
Examples of the craziness:
1) A lady asked me where I went to school and I said the University of Texas. She asked "are you gonna hang up a UT flag outside your house?" Ummmm. No.? "Well are you gonna hang a Georgia flag outside your house?" Ummmm. No.! Do I HAVE to hang a flag outside my house?
2) At the elementary school level: the boys each have soccer twice a week - a practice and a game. The practice is on Saturday and the game is during the week....????!!!! Because some players/coaches might want to watch football on Saturday...
3) And people really do stay home and watch football on Sturday instead of showing their children the value of practice and commitment... William's last practice had 50% of the kids in the entire LEAGUE there. Maybe it was 40%. Two teams didn't even show up (the coach must have cancelled practice ahead of time).
4) At the high school level:
Boys Sports offered in the Fall - Football and Cross Country.
Winter - Basketball, Swimming, Wrestling.
Spring- Soccer, Tennis, Baseball, Track.
So if your boy is into soccer and baseball, he has to pick his favorite. Oh, and they're adding lacrosse, and of course, that will probably be a Spring sport, too.
5) There is a parking lot in Athens that is a Tailgating Only lot. Like it's unused the rest of the year, not even for special events. They must make a ton of money to be able to have it open only four months. I want that job!
6) I've never seen so much red in my life.
7) The number of people I know who have season tickets... FAMILY season tickets... and go every home game.... and of course the spring game, too.
