We can't tell you why, but we named this house is named after an 80's movie.
For the past two years, we kept hearing over and over again about this house we needed to see. There were three houses off of a long private driveway. Each house was really nice and had ~20+ acres. We knew one homeowner from church, and the other was a work colleague of Bob's. They kept talking to us about this third house.
Funny enough, when Bob and I first came down to Athens in 2013 to see if we'd want to move here, that third house was on the market. We drove all the way down the driveway (trespassed??) and drove past the house. It didn't feel right. It felt really claustrophobic, partly because the shared-by-three-houses-driveway was about the width of a bike path (really. SO narrow). And there was a circle drive in front of the house that you could barely make it around. From what I could see online, the layout of the house was odd. It had a very small footprint. The first floor was two small living rooms, a kitchen and an eating area. The second floor had three bedrooms, 2 baths and a laundry area. And the top floor had the master suite. There was a basement, too.
The thing that was so nice about this house?? The wrap-around porch!!!

YES!! That IS a basketball court in the backyard!! In the only FLAT part of the yard, that is!

A potential VIEW behind those trees!

The kitchen. Older appliances, but plenty of space. And lots of windows (on the left wall, too).

This is what you see when you're standing in the kitchen looking towards the front of the house. It is all an open room. And yes, that is your front door right there. Welcome to the Kitchen, friends, neighbors and guests!
The view from one living room to the other. This is on the opposite side of the house from the kitchen/dining area. This is it on the first floor. Very small footprint.

Two bedrooms on the second floor

Another bedroom (right), plus a closet you walk through to get from one room to the other. Could be cool, or could be used by two boys for harm...

Laundry area on the second floor (you can see it in the pic on the right, too - the green floor). The stairs lead up to the third floor master suite. I have to say, the laundry area is very convenient. If you can't have it in the dirty area (main floor entrance), right in between all of the bedrooms like this would be pretty nice!

The bathroom was good-sized. And had a nice walk-in closet. I don't have a great photo of the master suite because I took a video of it instead.
These are views from the BALCONY off the master suite. FOUR levels up. Awesome, but alsoooooo... not.

The rest of the land - down the large hill. It's 25+ acres, total, so there's a good 15-20 acres of wooded land behin the house, and at the bottom there's a large swath of flat land, slightly swampy. Would definitely have potential to flood. But when you have 25+ acres, what does it matter if 5 of them flood? If it had been a shorter distance from the house to the flat part (i.e., the slope of the hill flatter or the hill smaller), we might have made this place work for us. The house would need a ton of work (i.e., 2000+ sf added). But the views and the potential for the land (if flatter) could have worked. |
